A problem I was challenged to solve ended up being one of my favorite projects to work on. A tired glass-front display case located outside the president’s office became an opportunity to showcase programs, milestones and interesting memorabilia of the University of South Alabama. The large format, museum-like installation had to be flexible enough to fit through four narrow doors, but once I figured out how to get a full size canoe through the narrow opening, I realized I could make it whatever I wanted it to be. Sometimes I started with scale models to figure out how to build it. Other times I enlisted help from facilities and renovations to build pieces like plexiglass octagons or a shelf that mimicked a wharf on Dauphin Island. This project is an example of transforming a finite space graphically without making any structural changes.
