South Magazine is published twice a year by the University of South Alabama and distributed to alumni and friends. In its previous iteration, South Magazine was a publication of the USA National Alumni Association, but in late 2023, the magazine underwent a significant facelift, and the effort was initiated by the Office of Marketing and Communications in collaboration with the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. With a focus on the University’s 60th anniversary, the editorial content leans into the short but storied history of the University with an emphasis on where we are and an AI-generated look at where we are going. The 48-page publication incorporates illustration, photography and best practices in publication design, and serves as a showpiece befitting of the Flagship of the Gulf Coast. The magazine received a Silver Circle of Excellence Award for magazine design from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

The Fall 2024 issue was all about movement and growth.

Traditions was the theme for the 52-page Spring 2024 edition of South Magazine with features on the new head football coach, the Jaguar Marching Band and what it means to be a Jaguar.

For the first time, South Magazine features an illustration on the cover, depicting landmark buildings added to campus since 1963.

12 pages were devoted to six decades of South, featuring imagery and text that described significant events in the history of the University.

Assuming we don’t know what we don’t know, we asked artificial intelligence what the University of South Alabama might look like when it turns 75. Not only that, we asked Adobe Firefly to generate illustrations to depict some of those predictions.
